Dry needling is a treatment which is aimed at reducing pain, increasing range of movement and generating the bodies natural healing response in musculoskeletal conditions. It can be highly effective in the treatment of acute injuries and chronic muscular tension. The therapist uses single use thin filiform needles into myofascial trigger points (areas that are painful or refer pain to further sites) in muscles, tendons or ligaments. The treatment can be deeply relaxing because the body produces endorphins in response, however this is not the primary function. Whilst this treatment does not specifically target meridians or traditional acupuncture points, many of the painful trigger points used will over lap. This treatment in usually part of a treatment plan and some massage will also be incorporated into the session.
